LESSON 5 · Wisdom of the East

The Whirling Dervishes

The Mevlevi Order, founded by Rumi's followers, practices a distinctive form of meditation through spinning. The sema ceremony involves whirling in precise circles while one hand points toward heaven and the other toward earth, symbolizing the Sufi as a channel between divine grace and earthly existence.

The spinning produces an altered state of consciousness similar to deep meditation. The physical sensation of boundaries dissolving mirrors the spiritual experience of ego-dissolution that Sufis seek. The body becomes a prayer.

Whirling is not ecstatic abandon. It is highly disciplined, requiring years of training. Each movement has specific meaning.
