Scuffed balls flew farther
In the 1800s, players noticed that old gutta-percha balls covered in nicks and gouges carried better than fresh smooth ones. Some began roughening new balls on purpose, and manufacturers eventually molded the texture in — first as raised bumps, later as the dimples used today.
