LESSON 5 · Why You Are the Way You Are

What Actually Matters

If birth order explains little, what does? Three factors with much stronger effects.

Genetics. Twin studies link roughly half of personality variation to our genes. DNA shapes temperament far more than sibling position.

Parenting style. Warmth, consistency, and expectations matter enormously, and they often vary between children for reasons unrelated to birth order.

Peers and experience. Adolescent friend groups shape personality as much as family does, and the years from 10 to 18 leave a lasting imprint. A key friendship, a loss, or a great teacher can redirect a personality in ways birth order could never predict.
