LESSON 4 · Boundaries That Protect Love

Common In-Law Boundaries

Boundaries that protect your marriage without burning bridges:

  • Visits: "We'd love to see you. Let's plan for [specific dates]" — prevents drop-ins
  • Advice: "We appreciate your perspective. We'll decide what's right for us"
  • Parenting: "We're handling [topic] this way. Please follow our lead with the kids"
  • Money: "We're not comfortable accepting money with conditions attached"
  • Notice: "We need a heads-up before visits, not assumptions"

Always frame a boundary as what you're choosing, not what you're forbidding. "We've decided" lands stronger than "You can't."
