The halo effect — our tendency to assume beautiful people are also kind, smart, and successful — is powerful but short-lived.

Long-term studies of couples find something striking: how attractive partners rate each other shifts with the quality of the relationship. Happy couples tend to see each other as more attractive over time. Unhappy ones see each other as less so, regardless of how anyone actually looks.
