LESSON 4 · Modern Marriage Essentials

The Money Conversation

Most couples avoid money until a crisis forces it open — and by then resentment has hardened. A regular, structured conversation prevents that. Cover four things:

  • Full disclosure — both share income, debts, and spending honestly
  • Values — what does money mean to each of you: safety, freedom, status?
  • Thresholds — set an amount above which you check in first
  • Account design — a system that honors both autonomy and partnership

Financial intimacy takes the same vulnerability as emotional intimacy. Hiding money is hiding part of yourself.
