Negativity Bias in Relationships
Your brain remembers negative interactions more vividly than positive ones. This evolutionary wiring creates a relationship problem: one harsh comment can erase the memory of five kind gestures.
This is why the ratio is 5-to-1 and not 1-to-1. You need a surplus of positivity because negativity carries disproportionate weight in your partner's memory.
Understanding this changes behavior. You stop thinking "I was nice all day, so one sarcastic comment is no big deal." It is a big deal. That comment may be the only thing your partner remembers from today. Protect the ratio actively.
