LESSON 5 · Fight Fair: Conflict Without Damage

A Softer Opening

Most repeating fights start with a harsh, accusing line, so they end the same way. The fix is a script you can reach for in the moment. Lead with your own feeling and a clear request — never blame.

Three stems that change the tone:

  • "I feel ___ when ___." — "I feel anxious when we're running late."
  • "What I need is ___." — "What I need is a heads-up if plans change."
  • "Can we figure out ___ together?" — invites a teammate, not an opponent.

Same topic, a startup soft enough to actually go somewhere.
