LESSON 5 · Take Back Your Attention

Redesign Your Home Screen

Your home screen is prime real estate, and most people fill it with attention traps. Apps on the first screen get opened far more often than buried ones, because placement drives behavior more than intention.

Redesign around tools, not feeds. Keep utilities on the first page: calendar, maps, camera, notes. Move social media to a later page, or open it only through search.

The grayscale trick works surprisingly well. Black and white removes the color cues that trigger dopamine, and red notification badges lose their urgency. Many people find they reach for the phone noticeably less in the first week.
