The Gender Politics of Fry
Research points to a troubling double standard. Male speakers using vocal fry are often perceived as relaxed and authoritative, while female speakers using the same pattern are judged as less competent and less hireable. Listening experiments have found this gap even when the fry is identical.
Understanding the bias does not mean women should avoid fry. It means being aware of how listeners may respond and making informed choices. Some speakers deliberately drop fry in professional settings while using it naturally in casual conversation. Others refuse to modify their natural speech pattern on principle.
