A study by acousticians at Georgia Tech found that the limestone seat rows at Epidaurus work like a filter: they damp the low-frequency rumble of crowd and wind while reflecting the higher-frequency sounds of a voice back up toward the audience. The Greek builders likely stumbled onto the effect without understanding the physics behind it.
