LESSON 5 · Command Any Room

Diagnosing Room Acoustics Quickly

Walk into any room and clap once loudly. A short, crisp echo tells you the room has reflective surfaces and will carry your voice well. A dull thud with no echo means soft surfaces are absorbing sound and you will need more projection. A long, ringing echo means sound bounces excessively, so you must speak slowly with clear pauses.

This three-second test gives you critical information for adjusting your delivery before you begin. Combined with a quick visual scan for hard walls versus curtains, carpeting versus hard floors, and ceiling height, you can predict most acoustic challenges and prepare your vocal strategy accordingly.
