Evolutionary Listening

Long before language evolved, early humans communicated through vocal tone. A warning cry, a soothing murmur, a distress call — these were processed by brain regions far older than language centers.

This ability is called prosodic processing — the interpretation of meaning from vocal qualities like pitch, rhythm, volume, and tempo independent of word content. It happens automatically and unconsciously. But like any skill, it can be sharpened through awareness and practice.
