LESSON 5 · The Emotional Voice
Micro-Expressions of the Voice
Just as faces flash micro-expressions, voices produce micro-variations that skilled listeners can catch. A brief pitch spike on a single word can reveal anxiety about that topic. A momentary slowdown can signal careful word choice, often a sign of discomfort.
To build this skill, listen to interview recordings with your eyes closed. Focus entirely on the voice and note moments where the tone shifts, even slightly. Then compare your notes to the content. These vocal micro-shifts tend to line up with the emotionally charged moments in a conversation.
