LESSON 6 · What Everything Is Made Of

Splitting the Unsplittable

The word "atom" comes from the Greek atomos, meaning indivisible. Ironic, because splitting atoms is exactly how nuclear power works.

This splitting releases an enormous burst of energy — plus two or three additional free neutrons. Those neutrons can strike other uranium-235 atoms, splitting them too. Each split releases more energy and more neutrons. The potential for a chain reaction was immediately obvious.
