LESSON 6 · What Everything Is Made Of

The Numbers Game

Putting nuclear energy in perspective:

  • Nuclear supplies about 10% of the world's electricity, from roughly 440 reactors in 32 countries
  • A single reactor produces enough power for 700,000 to 1 million homes
  • Nuclear has one of the lowest death rates per unit of energy produced — on par with wind and solar, and far safer than coal, oil, or gas
  • France generates about 70% of its electricity from nuclear, giving it some of Europe's lowest carbon emissions from power generation
  • The total volume of all high-level nuclear waste ever produced worldwide would fit inside a single football field stacked about 10 meters high.
