Smaller Than an Atom
Before inflation, the entire observable universe was packed into a region smaller than a proton. Around 10^-36 seconds after the Big Bang, a sudden phase transition triggered exponential expansion.

This expansion was not matter flying apart through space. Space itself was stretching. Nothing violated the speed of light because no object moved through space faster than light — space itself expanded, carrying everything with it at exponential speed.
