The Chin Target

A punch to the chin is devastating because of torque. The chin sits far from the neck's pivot point, acting as a long lever arm.

Torque equals force times the lever-arm distance. That is why coaches relentlessly drill "chin down": tucking the chin shortens the lever arm, so the very same punch produces far less rotation of the head. A raised chin does the opposite, handing the attacker maximum leverage.
