Glove Physics
Boxing gloves are often assumed to make the sport safer. The reality is more nuanced. Gloves spread the impact force over a larger area, reducing cuts and fractures to the face and hands.

Heavier gloves add mass to the fist, increasing the momentum of the punch while also spreading the impact over a larger area. The padding reduces the peak force of each blow but allows fighters to punch harder without breaking their hands. The net effect on brain injury is debated.
