LESSON 6 · Words That Win

Words Shape Worlds

Influence is not about volume or authority — it is about word selection. Persuasion research keeps finding the same thing: changing just one or two words in a request can sharply shift how people respond. The same ask, different words, different outcome.

These words pull people from passive agreement into active commitment: "commit," "guarantee," "promise," "own," "champion." Ask someone to "champion this initiative" instead of "help with this" — you elevate their role and trigger the consistency principle.
