LESSON 7 · From Mumbling to Commanding

The Punch Word Technique

Every sentence has one word that carries the core meaning — the punch word. Most speakers deliver every word at the same volume and emphasis, burying the punch word in a flat stream of sound.

To find the punch word, ask yourself: "If the listener could only hear one word from this sentence, which word would carry the message?" In "We need to finish this by Friday," the punch word is "Friday." In "That approach will never work," it is "never."

Once you identify the punch word, deliver it with slightly more volume, slightly slower pace, and a micro-pause before it. "We need to finish this by... Friday." This technique takes practice but transforms how people receive your message.
