Power of the Pause

Sometimes the strongest redirect is silence. When talk goes in circles or heats up, try: "Let us take thirty seconds to think before we continue."

The pause does two things. It breaks the loop people are stuck in, and it lowers the temperature so no one is reacting on impulse. The conversation that restarts is almost always calmer and clearer than the one you stopped.
