LESSON 6 · Your Emotional Operating System

The Overwhelm Response

Emotional flooding happens when your feelings spike so high that clear thinking becomes much harder. Your heart races, your thoughts scatter, and you feel like you are drowning in sensation. This is not a character flaw — it is a stress response with a body component.

When your amygdala flags an overwhelming threat, stress chemistry can sharply degrade prefrontal function. The planning part of your brain does not literally go offline, but logic, empathy, and good judgment become harder to access until your body settles.
