LESSON 6 · Your Emotional Operating System
Recovery Strategies
Once you are flooded, trying to reason perfectly on command usually fails because the thinking brain is under heavy stress. Recovery has to be physical first.
The 20-minute rule: the moment you notice flooding, ask for a break and leave the room. Your nervous system needs time to clear enough stress chemistry for prefrontal control to become easier again.
During the break, do something calming — slow breathing, cold water on your face, or a short walk. Do not replay the argument in your head; that keeps the cascade running. When you come back, you are more able to listen and respond instead of react.
