LESSON 8 · Tame the Anxiety Monster

More Than Shyness

Social anxiety is not introversion, and it is not ordinary nervousness. It is a persistent, intense fear of being judged, evaluated, or humiliated in social situations — strong enough to alter your behavior, limit your opportunities, and shrink your life.

Around 12% of adults experience social anxiety disorder at some point in life, making it one of the most common mental health conditions.

The distinction matters: shy people feel uncomfortable but still engage. Socially anxious people feel terrified and often avoid. The avoidance is the real problem — each situation you dodge reinforces your brain's belief that social interaction is genuinely dangerous.
