Exposure That Works
The gold standard for social anxiety is gradual exposure — facing feared situations in a structured way. The key word is "gradual." Throwing yourself into your worst fear without preparation is not brave; it is traumatizing.
Build a hierarchy, ranked from mildly uncomfortable to deeply feared:
- Small talk with a cashier
- Joining a group conversation at work
- A party where you know few people
- A presentation to colleagues
Start at the bottom. Repeat each level until the anxiety drops, then step up. The goal is simply to survive and let your brain register that you did.
