A commitment device is a mechanism that makes backing out of a goal costly or impossible.

Apps like StickK, founded by Yale academics, let you put money on the line that goes to a charity you dislike if you fail. The threat of funding a cause you oppose is a surprisingly strong motivator. Commitment devices work because they turn a vague future cost into a real, present-day stake.
