LESSON 6 · Goals That Actually Happen

Specific If-Then Plans

Psychologist Peter Gollwitzer of NYU found that public commitments work best when paired with implementation intentions: specific if-then plans. Instead of "I will exercise more," commit to "I will run at 7 AM every Tuesday and Thursday in the park near my house." The specificity closes the gap between intention and action.

Share the specific plan with your accountability partner, not just the goal. "I told my colleague I will send her my report draft by Friday at noon" is far more powerful than "I told my colleague I want to finish the report soon." A checkable commitment is what creates real accountability.
