A bandwagon was a decorated horse-drawn wagon carrying a band to draw a crowd. In 1848, circus clown Dan Rice used his bandwagon to rally support for presidential candidate Zachary Taylor, and crowds were urged to climb aboard. Rivals soon felt pressure to 'jump on the bandwagon' too.
