LESSON 6 · Outsmart Your Own Biases

Thinking for Yourself

Resisting the bandwagon requires recognizing when popularity is influencing your judgment:

  • Ask: "Would I choose this if nobody else had chosen it?"
  • Distinguish between popularity as quality signal (movie ratings from thousands) and popularity as herd behavior (trending topics)
  • Form your opinion before checking what others think — social proof contaminates independent judgment
  • Remember that every bubble, crash, and mass delusion was supported by overwhelming consensus at the time
  • Seek out independent thinkers who evaluate evidence rather than follow trends.
