Why Adjustment Fails

When you try to correct for an anchor, you adjust away from it. But research consistently shows that people under-adjust.

The anchor also activates selective accessibility. When you hear the number 65 before estimating African UN countries, your brain automatically retrieves facts that fit higher numbers. The anchor changes not just your starting point but which evidence you consider, quietly stacking the case in the anchor's favor.
