LESSON 6 · Confidence in Every Word

Beyond the Weather

Everyone knows small talk starts with the weather. The problem is it often ends there, because neither person knows where to go next. The fix is a mental list of bridge topics that move a conversation from surface to substance. Try the FORD method: Family, Occupation, Recreation, Dreams. After the weather opener, pick one: "Any plans for the weekend?" (Recreation) or "What got you into this field?" (Occupation). These questions invite stories instead of yes-or-no answers.
