LESSON 6 · Everyday Expressions & Idioms

Your Idiom Strategy

Use these guidelines to sound polished without sounding fake:

  • Learn idioms by category — negotiation, meeting, and email idioms — for faster recall
  • Open a point with one idiom and use plain language to support it: "Let me give you the bottom line. We save 20 percent."
  • Match your audience — startups love "pivot" and "disrupt"; traditional firms prefer "streamline" and "optimize"
  • Avoid stacking — never chain more than two business idioms in the same sentence
  • Replace tired phrases with specific alternatives that show original thinking

Business idioms are tools, not decorations.
