The Opening Script

Start with commitment, not demands: "I love working here and want to grow with this team. I have been thinking about what the next step looks like." Signals loyalty, shows initiative — versus "I deserve a promotion," which puts your manager on the defensive.

Follow with evidence: "Over [timeframe], I did [accomplishment], [accomplishment], [accomplishment]. I believe I am operating at the next level and want to discuss making it official now." Conversational, direct.
