The Steel Man Technique
Before arguing against someone's position, restate it better than they did. "If I understand correctly, you're saying X because Y. Is that right?"
This proves you listened, and it forces you to engage with their strongest argument, not a strawman. People are far more open to disagreement after feeling understood. Steel manning also sharpens your own thinking: you either find a better counter-argument or discover their position has merit you missed.
