The Language of Truth

The words you choose decide whether feedback lands or crashes. Replace accusatory "you always" with observational "I noticed that [specific behavior]." Replace judgments with descriptions.

Three phrases that work in almost any situation:

  • "When [this happened], the impact was [effect]."
  • "I've been thinking about [topic] and wanted to share an observation."
  • "Can I offer a perspective?"

Each opener lowers defensiveness and makes room for an honest exchange.
