Starting with no portfolio, clients, or reputation feels impossible. But every freelancer you admire began at exactly zero. Your first gig rarely pays well, and that is fine. Its real value is the case study it leaves behind for the next, better-paying client.

Stop waiting for the perfect first project. Build one small piece this week: a self-directed sample, a friend's site rebuild with permission, or a teardown of your old work. Treat it as portfolio proof, not unpaid client labor. One finished piece gives you both evidence and a story.
