LESSON 4 · Build a Reputation That Precedes You

The Signals That Matter

Three character signals disproportionately shape reputation: follow-through (doing what you said), calm under pressure (staying steady when others panic), and generosity (helping without expecting return).

These signals are observed, not announced. You can't tell people you have integrity — you can only demonstrate it consistently over time.

Character is revealed by what you do when a small rule is easy to break. Returning the overpayment, owning the delay you could have hidden, answering the late Slack from the junior dev — these micro-choices build reputational depth.
