The Active Listening Upgrade
Most people listen to respond. Active listeners listen to understand. The technique: after someone shares, reflect back the emotion behind their words before adding your own perspective.
"It sounds like that project was really frustrating for you" shows you heard more than facts — you heard feelings. This kind of acknowledgment creates instant rapport, because most people skip straight past the feeling and jump to advice.
Practice by consciously pausing 2 seconds after someone finishes before responding. The pause alone marks you as rare.
