LESSON 2 · Career Small Talk

The Conversation Arc

Great conversations follow a natural arc: opening (shared context), deepening (mutual disclosure), peaking (insight or laughter), and closing (a concrete next step). The peak is the precise signal to propose the next touchpoint before the energy fades.

Don't force the arc — guide it gently. When the conversation peaks, that is the moment to suggest continuing: "This has been great — could we grab coffee next week?" Proposing the next step at the peak captures maximum energy.
