LESSON 2 · The Habit Machine

Four Laws of Change

James Clear turned decades of behavioral science into four simple levers. Each one targets a different stage of the habit loop, and missing any one can make the habit fall apart:

  • Make it obvious — design your space so the cue is hard to miss
  • Make it attractive — pair the new habit with something you enjoy
  • Make it easy — shrink the action until it is hard to refuse
  • Make it satisfying — reward yourself right away so the brain wants a repeat

To break a bad habit, flip each law: make it invisible, unattractive, difficult, and unsatisfying.
