Tease the Outcome

To create an open loop in a talk or conversation, follow four steps:

  • Tease a surprising result without explaining it.
  • Build context the audience now craves.
  • Delay the payoff to grow tension, but not so long they give up.
  • Close the loop with an answer that connects back to your tease.

Calibrate the delay carefully. Too short and there is no tension; too long and the audience forgets or feels manipulated. Find the sweet spot where anticipation peaks just before patience runs out.
