LESSON 3 · Storytelling That Captivates

Suspense Never Stops

Cliffhangers are the most dramatic form of open loop. They work at the end of chapters, episodes, paragraphs. The technique is simple: stop at the moment of highest tension. Cut the scene right before the answer arrives. Let silence do the heavy lifting.

In everyday conversation, a subtle version works just as well. "The meeting did not go the way anyone expected" is a micro-cliffhanger that pulls listeners in. Withhold the resolution a beat longer than expected, and curiosity fills the gap.
