Listen to Understand

Most people listen well enough to reply, not well enough to understand. Real listening starts when you stop treating the speaker's last sentence as a launchpad for your next one.

Your phone should not compete with the person in front of you. Put it away: not face-up on the table, not in your hand on silent. A bag, pocket, or closed laptop signals that the conversation has your attention.
