Read the Nod
Nodding is more nuanced than most people realize. A single slow nod says "I understand." Rapid nodding says "hurry up, I want to talk." A slight head tilt signals curiosity. The wrong nod at the wrong moment can undermine the presence you want to show.
Other powerful presence signals include:
- Leaning slightly forward: communicates interest and engagement
- Open posture: uncrossed arms, facing the speaker directly
- Minimal encouragers: "mm-hmm," "go on," "I see" keep them talking
These signals are not performance. They tell the speaker their words matter.
