Surface Issue

Most arguments are not about what they look like on the surface. The dirty-dishes fight is really about feeling disrespected. The deadline dispute is really about feeling undervalued. The surface issue is just the tip of a deeper iceberg of unmet needs.

Understanding this changes how you approach conflict. Instead of debating the surface harder, ask what the person actually needs underneath. Address the real need and the surface issue dissolves on its own, without anyone having to win.
