LESSON 4 · Navigate Any Conflict
Creative Problem-Solving
A problem-solving framework for finding hidden solutions:
- Separate the people from the problem — depersonalize so both sides attack the issue together
- List all interests — what each side really needs, not what they are demanding out loud
- Brainstorm without judgment — generate as many options as possible before evaluating any
- Look for asymmetric trades — the lopsided swaps where win-win usually hides
The "what if" technique is especially powerful. "What if we extended the timeline but increased the scope?" tests reactions without anyone committing to anything yet.
