LESSON 3 · Words That Win

The Anger Family

Anger is not one emotion — it is a whole family of related states. Recognizing which one you are feeling changes how you respond:

  • Irritated — mildly bothered, easily resolved with a small adjustment
  • Resentful — a slow burn from unfairness over time
  • Contemptuous — feeling superior to the source of anger
  • Indignant — anger at injustice done to others
  • Exasperated — worn down by frustration you cannot escape

When you name the precise variant, you can address its real root cause instead of applying a generic anger-management strategy that misses the point.
