LESSON 4 · Sound Like a Boss

Vague Words, No Position

Vague language is comfortable. Phrases like "kind of," "sort of," "more or less," and "in a way" feel safe because they leave room to retreat. But they also leave your listener confused. When you say "I sort of agree," do you agree or not?

English learners often default to vague language because they're unsure of the exact word. Instead of searching for the right term, they pad sentences with qualifiers. The result is a message wrapped in so much cotton wool that the actual point suffocates.
