Twelve Tense Patterns

Grammar books often teach twelve English tense patterns and give them equal weight, which is exactly why they feel overwhelming. The truth is simpler: three forms cover almost everything you say day to day — simple present, simple past, and present perfect.

The other nine tenses are not useless, just specialized tools. You do not need all twelve in every conversation, the same way you do not need every tool in the box to hang a picture. Get three tenses right first, and the rest can wait.
